About the City

Getting a quote you can compare

Practices set their own fees, and surgical prices are usually only given after a consultation, so ask each office for a written, itemized quote. A useful quote separates the surgeon's fee from facility and anesthesia charges and says which follow-up visits are included. For non-surgical care such as tox, ask whether you pay per unit or per area and which product is used; FDA-approved cosmetic brands include Botox Cosmetic, Dysport, Xeomin, Jeuveau, Daxxify and Letybo. For dermal fillers, ask for the product and the number of syringes, and for laser work, the device, the area and the number of sessions.

How Maryland regulates cosmetic medical procedures

Our page on Maryland rules for injectors and lasers covers the detail. The points that matter most when you choose a provider here:

  • Injections and devices are medical procedures. Board of Physicians regulations define a cosmetic medical procedure to include injections of medical products under or into the skin and muscle, and the use of lasers, light, IPL and radiofrequency devices for cosmetic purposes.
  • The physician must be licensed and trained. A physician who performs, delegates or supervises these procedures must hold a Maryland medical license and be trained in the procedure; training from a device maker or vendor cannot be their only education.
  • Delegation has conditions. A physician may delegate to a physician assistant, or assign a procedure to another licensed provider whose own board considers it within scope. Before a non-physician treats you, the physician must personally perform your initial assessment, prepare a written treatment plan, obtain your informed consent and provide onsite supervision, with limited exceptions.

Estheticians in Maryland hold a Limited Esthetician License from the Board of Cosmetologists, and any service that penetrates beyond the epidermis is off-limits unless they also hold an appropriate health occupation license.

Checking credentials

Ask for the full name and license type of each person involved in your care. Look up physicians and PAs in the Maryland Board of Physicians Practitioner Profile Search, nurses and NPs in the Maryland Department of Health license lookup, and estheticians in the Maryland Department of Labor license search. Rules change, so confirm a license with the state board before you book.

What to ask before you commit

  • Who performs each part of my treatment, and what license does each person hold?
  • What board certification and training does the surgeon have for this procedure?
  • Where will surgery take place, and who provides anesthesia?
  • What is included in the quote, and what would cost extra?
  • What does recovery look like, and who do I call with a concern afterward?

Our approach

EAG evaluates providers independently, and payment never affects placement. Listings are updated as evaluations change. This page is general information about Maryland rules, not legal advice.

Common Questions

What patients ask

  • How much does cosmetic surgery cost in Lutherville-Timonium?

Practices set their own fees and usually quote after a consultation. Ask for a written, itemized quote that separates the surgeon's fee, facility fee and anesthesia, and lists included follow-up visits.

  • Who may inject tox or dermal fillers in Maryland?

Physicians can, and they may delegate to a physician assistant or assign the procedure to another licensed provider whose own board considers it within scope. The physician must personally assess you first and generally supervise on site.

  • How do I check a provider's license in Maryland?

Use the Board of Physicians Practitioner Profile Search for physicians and PAs, the Maryland Department of Health license lookup for nurses and NPs, and the Maryland Department of Labor license search for estheticians.

  • Can a Maryland esthetician give injections?

No. The Board of Cosmetologists' scope guidance lists tox, fillers and other injectables as prohibited for Limited Estheticians, and any service beyond the epidermis is off-limits without an appropriate health occupation license.
