About Patrick Bitter Jr.
Patrick Bitter Jr., M.D., is a board-certified dermatologist, the founder of Advanced Aesthetic Dermatology, and one of the most influential figures in the history of light-based skin rejuvenation. With practices in Los Gatos and Beverly Hills, California, he has spent more than three decades at the forefront of cosmetic and laser dermatology, earning a reputation that extends far beyond the state and well beyond the country.
Dr. Bitter graduated with highest honors in Biology from the University of California before earning his medical degree at Stanford University School of Medicine, where he also completed his dermatology residency in 1986. He initially shared a practice with his father, himself a dermatologist, and spent his early career focused on medical and surgical dermatology before gravitating toward the cosmetic innovations that would define his legacy.
That legacy centers on a single, transformative insight. In the late 1990s, Intense Pulsed Light technology was widely considered a failure. Originally approved to treat leg veins, IPL devices were burning patients and producing disappointing results. Dermatologists and laser experts at major conferences were openly condemning the technology, and the company that manufactured it was on the brink of bankruptcy. Dr. Bitter saw something different. Rather than targeting individual spots the way his colleagues did, he began treating the entire face with IPL, starting with rosacea patients at his Los Gatos clinic. What he observed changed everything. Not only did the rosacea improve dramatically, but patients kept coming back reporting that friends and family were telling them their skin looked healthier and years younger. Through a combination of careful clinical observation, relentless experimentation, and a measure of fortunate timing, Dr. Bitter developed and introduced the FotoFacial procedure in 1997. It was the first nonsurgical method of using pulsed light to rejuvenate aged skin with essentially no downtime, and it became an immediate sensation. Within five years, IPL went from a technology on the verge of being abandoned to an essential tool in aesthetic medicine.
The FotoFacial did not just create a popular treatment. It launched an entirely new category of light-based skin rejuvenation that reshaped how dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and aesthetic providers around the world approach aging skin. Dr. Bitter has since authored multiple groundbreaking scientific papers on pulsed light applications and has personally trained thousands of physicians across the globe in his techniques. He has delivered more than 600 lectures internationally, served as a key opinion leader for Sciton, Inc., and performed north of 50,000 FotoFacial and broadband light treatments himself.
His expertise has placed him in rooms and on stages that few dermatologists ever reach. He appeared as the celebrity dermatologist on ABC's Extreme Makeover, was featured as a cover story in Top Doctor Magazine, and in 2018 was named Male Dermatologist of the Year at the MyFaceMyBody Global Aesthetic Awards, selected from hundreds of applicants from across the United States at a ceremony held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los Angeles. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, a member of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine and the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, and has served as a consultant to the medical laser device industry as well as nutritional and anti-aging companies. He also serves as the official team dermatologist for the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Bitter brings the same intensity to athletic competition. He is a former USA Triathlon National Champion and a two-time finisher of the Hawaiian Ironman Triathlon, having competed in the original Ironman event in Kona, Hawaii, alongside his father while still a medical student at Stanford. He is a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
What sets Dr. Bitter apart is not just the breadth of his credentials or the volume of his experience. It is the fact that he personally changed the direction of an entire field. When the rest of the dermatology world was ready to throw IPL technology away, he picked it up, studied it with the patience and rigor of a Stanford-trained scientist, and turned it into the single most widely practiced nonsurgical skin rejuvenation procedure on the planet. Every patient who has ever walked into a clinic anywhere in the world and received a photofacial treatment owes something to the work Dr. Bitter did in his Los Gatos office in the late 1990s.
There are specialists, and then there are the people who invented the specialty. Patrick Bitter Jr. is the latter.
