Al Cohn

Dr. Al Cohn, MD, is a board-certified plastic surgeon and the founder of Cohn Plastic Surgery in Vestavia Hills, Alabama. Originally from Columbus, Georgia, Dr. Cohn has been serving the Birmingham community since 2006, specializing in surgical and non-surgical aesthetic procedures for the face, breast, and body, with particular emphasis on complex breast reconstruction surgery. Dr. Cohn earned his Bachelor of Science degree in psychology with a neuroscience concentration from Duke University in 1995, graduating cum laude with distinction. He received his Doctor of Medicine from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston in 2000, where he was elected president of his medical class all four years, inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society as a junior student, and served as the organization's local chapter president during his senior year. He was also the recipient of a four-year academic scholarship and multiple awards for service and leadership. Following medical school, Dr. Cohn was accepted into the highly competitive combined general surgery and plastic surgery residency training program at the University of Chicago Hospital, where he trained under an internationally recognized faculty. Upon completion of his chief residency in 2006, he pursued additional subspecialty fellowship training in cosmetic surgery of the face, breast, and body, with a focus on advanced breast reconstruction, under the mentorship of Dr. James Grotting. Dr. Cohn is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is an active member of The Aesthetic Society (ASAPS), the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the Southeastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, and the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery. He served as President of the Alabama Society of Plastic Surgeons from 2015 to 2016. He continues to serve as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery in the Division of Plastic Surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Hospital, a role he has held since 2007. Dr. Cohn has won awards for academic presentations at local, regional, and national meetings and has authored and co-authored numerous scholarly articles published in peer-reviewed plastic surgery publications. He is the proud father of three daughters and is married to his wife, Tracy. He is actively involved in community, religious, and philanthropic endeavors in the Birmingham area, including serving on the board of the Mountain Brook City School Foundation and as President of Temple Emanu-El.
