About Michael S. Beckenstein

Dr. Michael S. Beckenstein, MD, FACS, is a board-certified plastic surgeon and the founder of his private practice in Birmingham, Alabama, where he has served the cosmetic and reconstructive needs of patients since 1999. He is widely recognized as one of the region's leading breast enhancement and body contouring surgeons. Born and raised in New York, Dr. Beckenstein earned his Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Union College in Schenectady, New York. In 1987, he received his Doctor of Medicine from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia, where he was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society. He completed his internship and general surgical residency at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey, where he was awarded the Herbert Schulte Award for clinical excellence. He then completed a plastic surgery residency at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, followed by a research fellowship at the same institution. Dr. Beckenstein pursued an extraordinary series of fellowship training opportunities: breast reconstruction under Dr. Carl Hartrampf at the Breast Reconstruction Foundation in Atlanta, the pioneer of the TRAM flap technique; breast reconstruction and aesthetic surgery under Dr. Scott Spear at Georgetown University Medical Center; and aesthetic surgery and breast reconstruction under Dr. James Grotting in Birmingham, where he gained expertise in ultrasonic-assisted liposuction and facial plastic surgery. Dr. Beckenstein is certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is an active member of The Aesthetic Society and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. He holds a U.S. patent on a medical device and serves as a reviewer for the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He has authored and co-authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and several textbook chapters on breast, aesthetic, and reconstructive surgery. He performs over 600 breast, cosmetic, and reconstructive cases annually. Dr. Beckenstein founded the Alabama Breast Cancer Cooperative, a comprehensive resource providing breast cancer care and emotional support. His humanitarian work includes treating survivors of tragedy, including internationally recognized cases. He and his patients have been featured in local and national media, including the television show The Doctors. He is affiliated with Ascension St. Vincent's Birmingham and Grandview Medical Center.
